Total imports hit 0.5 million tons in Jan-July 2023. Bangladesh was purchasing large amounts of VegOil from Indonesia such as 121,000 tons and 83,600 tons per month. In terms of VegOil types, Palm Olein led others with 0.4 million tons, followed by Palm Oil (30,000 tons) and Soybean Oil (11,608 tons).

In 2020-21, an overwhelming 76% of Bangladesh’s total soybean oil imports came from Argentina, followed by 13% from Paraguay, 9% from Brazil and 2% from others. Some 87% of Bangladesh’s over 1.4 million tons of palm oil imports were sourced from Indonesia in 2020-21 while the remainder came from Malaysia.

Rising Demand for Palm Oil in Bangladesh Market

Vegetable oils, such as, palm oil, soybean, and sunflower are used in food industries. In 2022 palm oil imports increased 6,10% year on year (YoY) to be 1.511.000 tons, and soyoil imports increased 77.125 tons to be 1.285.987 tons compared to 2021. Palm oil, on the other hand, met 71% of total edible oil demand in 2013. The country's annual edible oil consumption is approximately 2,595,000 MT with imports accounting for 81% . According to the research, edible oil consumption (palm and soybean oil) increased by 12% in eight years, reaching 2,815,000 MT in 2021, up from 2,515,000 MT in 2013.
