  • Is oilseed sunflower a good feedstock for biodiesel?
  • Oilseed sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is quickly gaining popularity as a feedstock crop for biodiesel because it shares several positive agronomic features with other common oil crops such as canola and soy; yields well in a variety of conditions, and can be grown easily and profitably at both small farm and large field scales.
  • Can sunflower seed be used as a biofuel?
  • The high oil content of sunflower seed, often over 40%, makes it an excellent choice for a biofuel crop. Because it is already grown widely for use as food oil, agronomic practices are well established for regions where the sunflower is common in field rotations.
  • Can sunflowers make biodiesel?
  • Momentum is gaining for raising oilseed crops like sunflowers, canola, and soybeans to make biodiesel for fuel and oilseed meal for livestock feed, in addition to being sold as crops. Sunflower fields at Borderview Farm in Alburgh, VT. Photo by VT Bioenergy Initiative.
  • Can sunflower oil be used in direct injection diesel engines?
  • However, using vegetable oils in order to fuel direct injection diesel engines creates problems due to their low heat energy and high viscosity. The purpose of the experiments we made was to determine how the injection equipment behaves when sunflower oils are used and how these oils alter the power indexes of the engine.
  • Can sunflower oil offset petroleum diesel use?
  • Sunflower oil holds great potential for offsetting petroleum diesel use, especially at the farm scale. Sunflower oils are already used for high-grade food oils, and the meal can be readily used as a livestock feed.
  • What are the characteristics of sunflower oil biodiesel?
  • The synthesized sunflower oil biodiesel was characterized for its fuel properties i.e., density, dynamic and kinematic viscosities, cloud point, pour point, flash point, acid number and sulfur contents, employing the methods of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
